Cook County Allocates Funding for EV Charging

Cook County EV Charging Program

"Four-year initiative will bring up to 75 charging stations to underserved communities"

Cook County is the latest jurisdiction to allocate funding for EV charging stations for suburban Cook County. "Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle announced $5.5 million in funding today for the Electric Vehicle Charging Stations Program, an initiative led by the County’s Department of Environment and Sustainability and Bureau of Asset Management, to increase the number and access to public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations throughout suburban Cook County."

The four-year initiative will install up to 75 dual port public EV charging stations that cover the construction, hardware, and installation of the chargers. Warranty and networking fees will be cover for the first five years.

Where to place these stations is open to public input but to drive usage, they really need to be where people live given the time it takes to charge a vehicle. Current placement locations under consideration include "city hall, public library, community center, house of worship, housing complex, shopping complex or any other location that would offer convenient access to charging."
